big world small world

As you are aware, I refrain from using real names. However, I made an exception in this instance. I had a fare, and the individual's name displayed as America. I have encountered a wide range of names, but never America. She emerged, wearing a polo shirt with the Marriott logo. I assumed you are heading to work. She confirmed, stating she is employed at the Marriott. She appeared remarkably young. I inquired about her age, and she replied that she is 18 and had graduated just three weeks prior. I speculated that her father must have chosen her name. She acknowledged this, mentioning that she initially disliked her name but now finds it quite appealing. Now that you are an adult, what are your plans for the future? She expressed her desire to become a teacher, working full-time until she saves enough money to attend a junior college. She noted that junior colleges now offer four-year programs. Her goal is to teach special education, inspired by her sister, who has a learning disability. She has been helping her sister and realized this is her calling. I commended her on having a clear plan. She smiled and stated that she is aware it will be challenging but is eager to take on the challenge. I noticed the Marriott's address and inquired if there is a Denny's located nearby. She confirmed, asking how I knew. I explained that my late wife had worked there. She expressed condolences, asking if she might have known her. We used to visit that Denny's every Saturday morning. Although I do not typically share personal photos with passengers, I felt compelled to show her a picture of Michelle. Her eyes welled up, and she mentioned that she remembered her fondly. Apparently, a friend and fellow waitress would often call her 'bobblehead,' which always made them chuckle. She would give them hugs, making them feel like family. She was unaware of Michelle's passing and thought she had simply moved away. Tears began to form in her eyes. As we pulled into the parking lot, I reassured her that Michelle is in a better place. I turned around, smiled, and she touched my shoulder before exiting. This young woman, with grand aspirations in a vast world, suddenly found herself in a much smaller world. As I drove away, my phone notified me of a $5 tip. This young adult touched my heart.
