journey to the store

Image
Today's assignment involved transporting a mother and her two children. Upon arriving in a somewhat rough neighborhood, I observed that our destination was a grocery store. On a nearly daily basis, I provide transportation for lower-income families to and from retail establishments. As I arrived at their apartment complex, I noted the bustling activity in the parking lot, with numerous children playing. Unfortunately, some were engaged in mischievous behavior, having discovered a box of fluorescent lights, which they were throwing into the air and watching explode. My passenger, who utilized a wheelchair, had undergone a bilateral amputation below the knee, with one prosthetic limb. I assisted her into the vehicle, while her children efficiently folded and stowed the wheelchair in the trunk. During our journey to the store, the children were overheard giggling and teasing some of the older kids. Their mother promptly reminded them not to mock others, as it was not their fault. The ...

Money doesn't make the person better

I'm currently in downtown Phoenix, awaiting a pickup. The area I'm in is affluent, with apartments valued at over $3 million. I notice an older Mexican lady waiting for me, carrying a bucket with cleaning supplies, two mops, and a broom. She apologizes for the inconvenience, but I assure her it's not a problem and invite her to relax. As we prepare to depart, a man in a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, valued at approximately $175,000, begins honking impatiently. He pulls up beside me and gives me a disapproving look. I suspect that if I were alone in my truck, the situation might have unfolded differently. This encounter serves as a reminder that wealth does not necessarily equate to superiority. Upon dropping her off, I take a moment to observe her living situation. The apartments are modest, with barely adequate living conditions. I assist her with her belongings and carry her bucket to her door. I notice 12 cats in the parking lot, and the open doors of the studios reveal cram...

Nervous young lady.

Image
It's graduation time for college students. I recently had the pleasure of transporting a young lady who had just graduated from GCU. She was impeccably dressed and en route to a graduation party with a friend from school. However, the destination was unfamiliar to her. Approximately 20 minutes into the ride, she began to exhibit signs of nervousness, which was evident in her voice. I inquired about her concern, and she expressed her uncertainty about the location, noting that we were not driving through a particularly affluent area. We were approaching 24th Street and Broadway. She voiced her apprehension, stating that she only knew her friend from school and wouldn't be acquainted with anyone else. I took a moment to review the destination and reassured her that it was actually a very upscale location, the Legacy Golf Resort. However, she was unaware of this. I offered her the option to return if she felt uncomfortable. I also shared a piece of advice, suggesting that sometime...

a man and his son

The majority of fares I drive around town tend to be forgettable. Yesterday, however, I had the pleasure of meeting an individual who left an indelible mark. I picked him up downtown at a hospital, where he appeared visibly exhausted and troubled. As is my custom, I greeted him with a courteous hello and inquiry about his well-being, which helps me gauge the tone for the ride. John took a deep breath and assured me he was fine, though I sensed otherwise. May I ask who you'll be visiting? He shared with me that his six-month-old son was on a respirator. I allowed him to share his story, and I listened attentively to his situation. This was a twenty-minute ride, affording him ample opportunity to express himself. When he finished speaking, I could discern a sense of relief in his voice, having unburdened himself. He then inquired about my motivation for driving for Lyft. I shared a brief overview of my circumstances. After sharing my story, I wanted to impart a message of hope and re...

Introduction of Driver for Two

I am a Lyft driver. I would like to share some stories about people and places I see as a I drive around Phoenix. I will include pictures of what I'm looking at. It should be a fun ride. This first picture is at Papago Park. As I waited for my fare. I had this for my view. My fare was from Croatia. She was an exotic dancer on tour. Trust me by saying yes I could see her as a dancer.
